In our opinion, the two main factors you are looking for in a first surboard are:

Safety:

We always recommend Softop boards for beginners. They are basically a hard surfboard (well actually they are even better than a hard surfboard because they are stronger) except that the deck (the top of the board) and the rails, nose and tail are covered in a durable 4mm EVA rubber. The main benefit of this rubber is that if the board whacks you or someone else in the head (quite likely while learning to surf!) the victim comes up laughing it off instead of going to the hospital for stitches! Unlike most soft surfboards, Softops are also stiff, as opposed to flimsy, so they perform like a hard surfboard. The only difference that you might notice is that they don't go or respond quite as fast as a hard board, because they are not quite as hydrodynamic (hard fiberglass slides through the water faster than rubber). However, this is a good thing while learning to surf because it makes the board a bit more stable.

Flotation

Proper surf board flotation is absolutely essential for learning how to surf. What determines how well a board floats? The amount of foam in it! Basically, how long, wide and THICK is the board? When a board floats well you can paddle faster, catch waves more easily, and stand up with more stability. It's hard to have fun on a board that doesn't float well. In fact, this is probably the main reason for anyone getting discouraged while learning to surf. If you've tried surfing but just can't seem to get the hang of it, try a bigger board!

Little kids about 5-8 years of age can learn on boards about 6'0" to 7'6".

Kids about 9-12 can learn on boards about 7'6" to 8'6".

Teenagers and small women can learn on boards about 8'6" to 9'0".

Men generally need a big board to learn on: 9'6" to 10'6".
